California Governor Signs Bill That Could Result In Reparations for Slavery

According to a report from Deadline, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law that could possibly grant reparations for descendants of slaves in the United States.

Following this week’s presidential debate, Gov. Newson said, “After watching last night’s debate, this signing can’t come too soon. Advancing this cause where it’s not just a question on a questionnaire for a candidate running for office but actually taking shape here, that’s a meaningful moment,” said Newsom. “This conversation is so long overdue.”

Assembly Bill 3121, which is the reparations bill, will authorize a task force that will study how to not only implement the reparations, but will assist in getting rid of laws in California “that continue to disproportionately and negatively affect African Americans.” Newsom and the task force propose that a “a formal apology on behalf of the people of California for the perpetration of gross human rights violations and crimes against humanity on African slaves and their descendants.”

Ice Cube saluted the bill, saying, “Thank you Governor @GavinNewsom for signing AB3121,” adding, “Thank you @ADOSLosAngeles for bringing the bill to my attention so we could push from all angles.”
