Meet SVP of A&R for Republic Records, Mel Carter

Mel Carter is best known for being the Senior Vice President of A&R at Republic Records. Carter scouts and signs new talents for the record company. He’s built strong relationships with producers, songwriters, and artists over the years helping connect all levels of talent. With 12 years of experience in the music industry, Carter is a force to be reckoned with.

When asked why Republic Records chose to appoint Mel Carter as SVP of A&R, Executive VP Rob Stevenson said that it’s because Carter ignited a dynamic and diverse movement through Hikari-Ultra. His company’s joint venture with Republic Records allows him to continue fulfilling his
role as CEO. Carter oversees and owns Hikari-Ultra (along with his partner P) a music label and management company that helped Cee Kay and City Morgue rise to fame.

Within the last year, the company generated 3 million in artist merch and apparel sales. City Morgue has sold out shows worldwide, all thanks to Carter. Aside from being a CEO and SVP, Mel Carter is also an investor in various businesses, the most well-known of which is Sweet Chick. Owned by hip-hop legend Nas and John Seymour, the restaurant chain is best known for its delicious chicken and waffles. Mel Carter’s life hasn’t always been this way. He came from humble beginnings.

Hailing from Trinidad, Carter came to the US at the age of 12. As a troubled teen growing up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Carter states at times he saw no way out. Carter and his younger sister were raised by his single mother, who was diagnosed with lupus when he was just 15. He recalled that to be the time when life got really tough. After his mother’s illness, Carter found it difficult to find stability because they often had to relocate homes
as his mother was out of work. He was deprived of a college education. However, Carter did not let poverty stop him from reaching for the stars.

He may have a lot on his plate, but Carter maintains a healthy balance between his business, work and family. Follow him on Instagram @melcarter
