While much of the world has been steadily heading towards reopening, with artists booking new tours and clubs opening their doors, the Netherlands is going back into lockdown just two weeks after lifting restrictions. COVID-19 continues to make its way through the world, with the Delta variant proving to be more infectious than previous strains as it targets younger people.
Following an increase of 7,000 new cases in just 24 hours, Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte called for clubs and festivals to close back down, limiting socialization to smaller gatherings such as birthday parties and backyard drinks. Speaking in a press conference, Rutte said,
“Our aim is to protect those with vulnerable health conditions and the health service, as well as to cause as little damage as possible to the economy and society. It is not a question of blaming a particular age group or sector. […] Be sensible. Keep parties small and manageable, and keep to the basic rules.”
While social distancing guidelines will be put back in place, the Netherlands will only resume mandated masks for those on public transportation. The current guidelines will remain in place until August 14, and be re-evaluated on August 13.
