Eaton Canyon Fire Near Altadena Forces Evacuations

A fast-moving wildfire dubbed the “Eaton Canyon Fire” has erupted near Altadena, California, threatening homes and forcing mandatory evacuations.

The fire broke out Tuesday evening around 6:30 p.m. and has already burned over 400 acres, according to officials from the Angeles National Forest.

Evacuation Orders and Threatened Areas

Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for several areas, including:

  • East of Altadena Drive
  • Kinneloa Canyon Road
  • Outpost Lane
  • Grand Oak and surrounding neighborhoods
  • North of New York Drive
  • West of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue

Evacuees can seek shelter at All Saints Church, located at 132 N. Euclid Avenue in Pasadena.

Firefighters Battling Challenging Conditions

Crews from multiple agencies, including the Pasadena Fire Department, L.A. County Fire Department, and U.S. Forest Service, are working tirelessly to contain the blaze. However, a powerful windstorm, with peak winds expected overnight, is complicating their efforts. Fire officials warn that the situation poses a “significant threat to life and property.”

Community on High Alert

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to gather essential belongings and prepare for extended evacuations. “The whole house is full of smoke right now,” said KTLA meteorologist Kaj Goldberg, who lives near the fire zone. “I’ve never witnessed winds like this before.” Large oak trees have reportedly been uprooted by the wind, adding to the danger.

Recent Wildfire Activity in Southern California

Earlier in the day, another massive wildfire in Pacific Palisades forced over 30,000 residents to evacuate as it burned more than 2,900 acres. The Eaton Canyon Fire, though smaller, is developing quickly and has already drawn comparisons to the destructive nature of the Palisades blaze.

Authorities are urging the public to stay informed and heed all evacuation warnings. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, and follow resources like CAL FIRE and the Angeles National Forest for the latest information on the Eaton Canyon Fire near Altadena.
