Heads up! New Zealand’s bass duo Truth is touching down in Portland this Saturday and bringing their signature Deep Dark & Dangerous sound to Realm. Joined by Stylust, Chef Boyarbeatz, and Saltus, this is shaping up to be one of the heaviest nights the venue has seen since opening its doors in September.
The Architects of Deep Dubstep
Truth—the duo of Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake—have spent nearly two decades carving out their own lane in bass music. What started in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2007 has grown into a global movement, complete with their own label, Deep Dark & Dangerous.
Their origin story is the stuff of dubstep legend. Mala of Digital Mystikz signed their debut single, and from there they built a catalog that spans releases on Deep Medi Musik, Tempa, and their own DDD imprint. Their music has infiltrated major television productions including American Horror Story, and they’ve taken home the Best Electronic Artist award at the New Zealand Music Awards.
But here’s what matters when you’re standing in front of those subs: Truth creates music designed to be felt. The duo has mastered the art of negative space—knowing exactly when to let the bass breathe and when to let it consume the room entirely. Their live sets are exercises in tension and release, drawing from nearly two decades of DJ support from legends like Mala, Skream, and Liquid Stranger.
With Fernandez now based in Portland, this show carries a hometown energy that makes it even more essential.
The Supporting Cast
Stylust needs no introduction to anyone who’s spent time in the West Coast bass scene. The Canadian-born, Portland-based producer has been fusing hip-hop swagger with heavy bass since the late 2000s, earning co-signs from Bassnectar and building a reputation as a Shambhala staple. His 15th year at the Village Stage in 2024 cemented what heads already knew: nobody kicks off a night quite like Stylust. His collaborations with Truth have been fan favorites for years, making this pairing particularly potent.
Chef Boyarbeatz and Saltus round out the lineup, ensuring the night builds with intention from the moment doors open.
The Venue
Realm has quickly established itself as Portland’s answer to the question every bass head asks: where can I actually feel the music? Housed in the reimagined Melody Ballroom—the same walls that once shook for Tool, Nirvana, and Soundgarden—the venue features a d&b KSL cardioid system that delivers low end with surgical precision. The largest 4K LED wall on the West Coast doesn’t hurt either. Follow Realm on Instagram @Realm.pdx to see all their upcoming shows!
This is the kind of room Truth’s music was made for.
