Now we have definitive, empirical proof that the late electronic producer and multi-hyphenate talent SOPHIE is officially orbiting in outer space. In an effort to commemorate the “insurmountable impact” that SOPHIE has had on the music industry, the LGBTQIA+ community, and the more, super fan Christian Arroyo created a petition to name exoplanet TOI-1338b after the iconic producer. After a hard fought battle, Arroyo along with co-signer and close personal friend of SOPHIE, Charli XCX, as well as more than 95,000 signers lobbied the International Astronomical Union’s Working Group Small Body Nomenclature (WGSBN), who instead opted for asteroid 1980 RE1. Fans and friends alike have officially succeeded in renaming asteroid 1980 RE1, Sophiexeon, after the transcendental phenomenon. As the old adage goes, “shoot for the exoplanet, land among the asteroids.”
The exoplanet was originally discovered in 1980 by Antonín Mrkos at the Kleť Observatory in the Czech Republic, with an outer surface that reflects the pastel colors used in musical mastermind’s 2018 LP, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Says Arroyo on the petitions ultimate success, “SOPHIE has influenced so many of us, and now she will forever be part of the cosmos.”
SOPHIE died in January of 2021 after falling from a balcony in Athens, Greece while attempting to capture a photo of the full moon. SOPHIE’S brother, Ben Long, who was also her tour manager, live engineer, and mixing engineer, is reportedly working on completing tracks from an archive of hundreds of unreleased songs from the late producer. So far fans have only gotten a glimpse into these works of art in the form of one posthumous release, “JSLOIPNHIE” with Jlin.
