Duke Dumont details his ‘LIVE’ format ahead of Avant Gardner show date [Q&A]

Come December 29, electronic enthusiasts in the Tri-State area will have the opportunity to commence their 2021 New Year’s Eve celebrations early—and to the tunes of Duke Dumont. The Duality album maker is slated to take his Duke Dumont LIVE format to Avant Gardner‘s Great Hall, where he’ll steward an evening of house sound running the gamut from the dulcet to the club-driven.

Touted by Dumont as “one of the best live electronic music experiences you could see,” the LIVE show in Brooklyn follows the Englishman’s two-night run in September, where he deployed his LIVE audio-visual experience at Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall. Ahead of his date with Avant Gardner, where Classixx and Jacques Green will provide support, Duke Dumont detailed the LIVE format in a Q&A with Dancing Astronaut, how Duality exists in synergy with the LIVE approach, and his intentions for 2022. The Q&A can be read below, with a limited number of tickets to Dumont’s LIVE show available for purchase here.

Can you describe how your LIVE format differs from the standard DJ set for your listeners who aren’t familiar with your LIVE show?

Duke Dumont: “It’s one of the best live electronic music experiences you could see. Feel free to ask anyone who came to either night at The Shrine. My hard work, vision, heart, soul and DNA is ingrained into an audio-visual spectacle.”

What about Duality specifically translates well to this different LIVE format?

Duke Dumont: “The dynamic of the album, and the visual nature the songs lend themselves to. It is not 200-mph dance records from the start to end. It’s a way I can perform my music without the constraints that DJing can hold. I can perform records such as ‘Let Me Go’ with RY X, running through the modular synth and the bassline through the Moog, that I couldn’t do within a DJ set.”

What motivated you to take up this LIVE approach?

Duke Dumont: “Demonstrating my music in the best capacity possible. That would not be possible with the medium of DJing. Having done this behind two CDJs would have felt disingenuous.”

The LIVE show at Avant Gardner brings a close to your 2021. What can your following expect from you in 2022?

Duke Dumont: “I’ve made hit records. I’ve made radio records. I’ve made club records. My only goal is to make emotive records to create moments within my show. That’s the aim for 2022.”
