New BBC podcast explores origins of acid house and ecstasy

BBC will release a new, 12-part podcast centered on the story of rave and ecstasy in the UK. Titled Ecstasy: The Battle of Rave, the upcoming series stars BBC Radio presenter Chris Warburton, who investigates the emergence of the rave scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Combining factual and dramatized episodes, the half-documentary, half-drama podcast explores the origins of the popular rave drug and the domination of acid house through interviews with dealers, ravers, DJs, and other key players.

Written by Danny Brocklehurst, Ecstasy: The Battle of Rave will also feature a specially-curated soundtrack by Graeme Park that takes listeners through the music of the era, starting from Chicago house influences and working its way through British acid house staples.

“The story of how ecstasy changed crime, policing and youth culture in Britain in the ’80s has been one that I have wanted to tell for a long time. It’s an epic battle and speaks about issues larger than a single drug,” states Brocklehurst.

Ecstasy: The Battle of Rave will be available on September 11. Listen here.
