Nicolas Cage to star as Joe Exotic in new Tiger King series

Following the explosive debut of Netflix miniseries Tiger King, Nicolas Cage has been revealed as the star of an upcoming scripted series focused on the infamous zookeeper Joe Exotic. The eight-episode production will mark Cage’s first regular television role and the second scripted series about the eccentric individuals involved in the strange plots of Tiger King, with the other being a podcast-adapted series starring Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin.

Based on a Texas Monthly article written by Leif Reigstad, “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,” the show will notably be overseen by American Vandal showrunner Dan Laguna, who will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer for the forthcoming series. Laguna’s Netflix-premiered mockumentary American Vandal received critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination. The new project will be produced conjunctively by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios—the latter of which first optioned the article back in June 2019, unbeknownst to the public.
