Pharrell recruits JAY-Z for Neptunes-produced song, 'Entrepeneur'

Alongside his new Time cover package “The New American Revolution,” Pharrell has joined forces with JAY-Z on a new collaboration, “Entrepreneur.” The Neptunes-produced track arrives with a special Pharrell-curated issue of the magazine, which focuses on the systemic inequalities that Black people have faced throughout the nation’s history and “visions of a Black Future that fulfill a nation’s promise.” Featuring Tyler, The Creator, Angela Davis, Naomi Osaka, Kenya Barris, and an essay penned by the Virginia Beach artist himself, “The New American Revolution” reflects on racism in America while spotlighting conversations about injustice, accountability, and change.

In “Entrepeneur,” Black ambition take centerfold as Pharrell and JAY-Z deliver powerful lyrics over a warm, brass-filled beat. Simultaneously groovy and triumphant, the song is set to visual montages of various Black entrepreneurs around the world and their success stories, including a cameo by Tyler, The Creator. Addressing inequities across representation, education, and systemic disadvantages encountered by people of color, the collaborative tune pushes forward Black economic empowerment in its inspiring alignment with the message behind “The New American Revolution.”

“The intention for a song was all about how tough it is to be an entrepreneur in our country to begin with. Especially as someone of color, there’s a lot of systemic disadvantages and purposeful blockages. How can you get a fire started, or even the hope of an ember to start a fire, when you’re starting at disadvantages with regards to health care, education, and representation?” stated Pharrell to Time.
