Spotify hosts first all-women festival, EQUAL

After taking a stand in support of Ukraine, Spotify continues to utilize its $27 billion platform to support other matters of importance, namely amplifying women in music. Spotify originally unveiled the EQUAL hub in 2021 to show its “commitment to fostering equity for women in music globally.” The hub spans 50 countries, a myriad of genres, moods, and even mediums, with podcasts also credited as a major category. After successfully turning its ¡Viva Latino! and Rap Caviar playlists into live events, Spotify has announced the launch of EQUAL, it’s very first all-female music festival. “We understand that fairness in music is a complex issue that goes beyond the industry, but we want to do our part from the trenches,” a spokesperson for Spotify said. “By giving artists more power, more space, and more support, we can get more people to listen to them, more women to know that it can be achieved and that every day more opportunities are created and there are more women on the playing field. The music itself shapes a more equitable future.”

The Colombia-based event kicked off on April 1 at El Teatro in Bogota and will culminate on April 29. Produced by Spotify’s music team in Colombia, EQUAL unites 13 of Colombia’s standout women acts to the main stage. Celebrating women’s artistry and contributions to music is Paola Jara, who is set to perform on April 20; Lido Pimienta and Nidia Gongora, headlining on April 22; Andrea Echeverri and Maria Cristina Plata, performing on April 27; and Farina and Bad Milk, who will close out the festival on April 29.
