Vinyl overtakes the CD in sales for first time in more than four decades

According to a recently released report from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), music fans bought more vinyl records than CDs in the first half of 2020. Giving data-based credence to the rebirth of vinyl, this is the first time since the ’80s that vinyl sales have outpaced CD sales, with vinyl contributing $232 million to total physical music sales during this period.

In total, physical sales of music weighed in at $376 million. In another first, RIAA’s report also showed that ad-supported streaming services such as YouTube overtook physical sales in terms of revenue, generating $421 million. View the full report from RIAA here.
