Westwood Recordings, the Vancouver-based music label, is commemorating a decade of outstanding accomplishments with a month of special releases, inaugurated by a compilation packed with hits dubbed “10 Years of Westwood Recordings”. Established in 2013 by Nick Middleton, one half of The Funk Hunters, Westwood Recordings boasts an impressive list of achievements. With such a remarkable track record, the label is expected to enjoy an even more prosperous and eventful future.
The album mirrors the label’s versatile yet party-friendly sound, featuring tracks from the label heads The Funk Hunters, as well as Defunk, Moontricks, K Theory, Stickybuds, Kotek, LIINKS, and SugarBeats, demonstrating the Canadian imprints commitment to thought-provoking, dance-inducing, and genre-agnostic electronica.
The album wastes no time getting funky. Things open with “Freak” by The Funk Hunters and Defunk, introducing listeners to a world of edgy basslines, sharp synths, and distorted vocals. The journey of sound moves into the swing-inspired midtempo “Nebulizer” by Moontricks and “Outlaws” by K Theory, which uniquely blends hip-hop vocals with heavenly bass melodies. Listeners are then treated to Stickybuds’ organic electronica track “Family Man,” featuring Glen David Andrews, followed by the drum & bass rhythm of “Dance With Me” by Kotek. The album wraps up with the balladic “One Thing About Me” by LIINKS and SugarBeats’ “Wild Cat,” which delivers a headbanging conclusion of dark and grimy sounds.
Nick Middleton, Founder & CEO of Westwood Recordings, remarks on the milestone:
“Marking 10 years of Westwood feels almost dreamlike. I’m incredibly proud of this milestone. What began as a passion project for our music has blossomed into a collective of artists, creatives, and music enthusiasts that has surpassed all my expectations. This month-long festivity is a display of the best of the past, the present, and the future. I eagerly look forward to what the next decade has in store for us.”
