13 people have been killed in stampede at a Peruvian nightclub, a situation that arose after the national police raided the venue for an illegal COVID-19 party on Saturday, August 22.
Police were called to Thomas Restobar in Lima, the country’s capital city to shut down an overcrowded and illegal party with over 120 guests. As social distancing measures in Peru currently ban large gatherings of this nature, the owners of the nightclub were detained and arrested. In all, 23 people were arrested during the raid, 15 of whom tested positive for coronavirus shortly after.
Although Peru quick to employ strict measures against COVID-19 earlier this year, the South American country has seen a surge in cases as of late, totaling in 27,000 deaths.
