Copenhagen will ban people with criminal records from nightlife venues

Beginning on September 14 and lasting for a two-year period, Copenhagen law enforcement will be setting bans for those with a criminal record to enter certain areas in the city. Sectioning off parts of Copenhagen into four zones, those who have had previous convictions, including weapon offenses, will not be allowed to walk through the streets of Gotersgade, Vestergade, Vesterbrogade, and Kødbyen due to what will become the new “nightlife” zones.

A fine of 10,000 kroner will be issued to first-time offenders, with 30 days in prison for repeat offenses. Copenhagen police director Anne Tønnes said of the ban that will go into effect,

“The law enables exchange of information about persons with nightlife bans with bar owners. But we are currently waiting for more detailed information on how this will take place in practice.”

The new law aims to provide “a more secure nightlife environment for everyone,” with law-abiding citizens having the ability to continue walking through Copenhagen as they always have.
