Hip-hop and techno record producer Waajeed has shared his plans to build a Detroit based community music hub. Named Underground Music Academy, the initiative aims to build the future leaders of independent electronic music.
The project will be established on the same grounds as legacy-holding Detroit Black-owned music institutions including the Motown Museum, Moodymann’s Mahogani Music, and Underground Resistance—which directly inspired Waajeed to catapult Underground Music Academy.
The curriculum will focus on two pillars of electronic music: the art of deejaying and the art of production. Additionally, featured courses on publishing basics, job placements, and internships will be available. Fundraising efforts are currently being pushed, with Waajeed dedicating all proceeds from his two-part EP, Acts of Love to the cause.
Launching in 2021, Underground Music Academy will offer a series of free online tutorials tailored to all intermediate and expert skill levels. Its physical multi-purpose space will encompass 2500 square meters and is due to open in 2022.
