iPod officially discontinued by Apple after more than 20 years

Apple has announced the company’s decision to discontinue what has been arguably the most influential, and popular, digital device for more than two decades—the ubiquitous iPod. The iPod Touch, the last remaining model of the once groundbreaking mp3 player, will disappear from the market forever once the existing stock of iPod Touches is sold out, Apple said on May 10. The company launched the latest version of the iPod Touch only three years ago—their first brand new iPod drop since 2015. Many tech aficionados speculated that the company would be releasing a new iteration of the iPod, not the somber news that it would cease production of the digital music streaming device indefinitely.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” reads the statement from Apple. The innovative product lives on through integration on many of Apple’s products today.

The first iPods landed on shelves in October of 2001, featuring the original iconic pinwheel navigation, holding just 1,000 songs in its bulky white frame. Over the years, sizing, shapes, functionalities, video capabilities, and more made the iPod one of the most in-demand consumer products on the market, and eventually touch screen and internet connectivity would make for one of the most important contributions to modern technology in the 21st century—the iPhone. Now, all good things must come to an end; R.I.P. iPod.
