Lorde has returned to deliver an important PSA: her new work, “is so f—king good.” The universally-renowned singer updated fans in a lengthy heartfelt newsletter on Tuesday, May 19 that detailed her time in quarantine, introspected about the creative process and touring, and teased upcoming music with producer Jack Antonoff. Lorde released her last album Melodrama to widespread acclaim in 2017, although remaining relatively undercover since then. However, her recent message solidifies the fact that the third studio album will be well worth the wait.
The New Zealand indie-pop star begins her personal note with a brief check-in, “I realised the other day it had been a minute since we chatted, and I was missing you. Do you wear your hair long or short now? Did you take your piercings out?” She goes onto describe the state of her homeland and its slow return to normalcy, before explaining the impact of losing her dog Pearl on herself and creating music—sharing an intimate anecdote from her saved notes on grief.
“It was summer, a time of year which is usually so clarifying and special to me, but I was grieving hard for Pearl, carrying it everywhere with me. I found a note in my phone from November which said: I eat a grief sandwich / I wear a grief coat / I see a grief film,” wrote Lorde.
Lorde reveals she made her way back to the studio in December 2019, finding her creative voice returning to her and subsequently recruiting collaborator Antonoff to create alongside her once again. Despite the coronavirus pandemic setting their progress astray, the double Grammy-holder discloses work is still being done and that “this new thing, it’s got its own colours now,” urging fans to indulge in the anticipation of a time withstanding output. If we’re confident of anything, we know that this new Lorde album will be a spectacle in itself.
“The work is so f—ing good, my friend. I am truly jazzed for you to hear it,” concluded Lorde.
