It was forecast in Mau P‘s reasoning for his placement in Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2023, but it may as well be restated now. Naming a pair of debut releases in dance music that hold more weight than the two that Mau P has to his credit in less than a year would be a tall order. “Drugs From Amsterdam” already had the house music scene—and dance music at large for that matter—in a complete sonic chokehold throughout the 2022 summer. And within just a couple of weeks, another ID from the Mau P bank popped up in sets from the likes of John Summit, Lee Foss, and Dom Dolla. That track has now arrived in all its release glory, with Mau P crossing his name off Dancing Astronaut‘s most-anticipated releases of 2023 with the delivery of “Gimme That Bounce” on Insomniac Records.
To catch those up to speed who may have been under the belief that Mau P randomly caught fire out of thin air this past year, that’s not exactly the full story. In the same fashion that he’s already been doing within modern-day house, Maurice West had ruled bigroom throughout the 2010s, but he came to the eventual conclusion during the pandemic that in order for his music to move forward, he had to take a step back and start entirely from scratch. And with one original alone this past August, he was able to begin actualizing that goal for himself.
“Gimme That Bounce” unequivocally doubles down on the rejuvenating new-age presence that “Drugs From Amsterdam” was teeming with. And that couldn’t be farther removed from a fortuitous “lightning strikes twice” situation considering the near decade-long stack of blue-chip productions that placed Mau P in a position to exponentially skyrocket from moment the project was given the green light. With an outright rousing, tension-induced buildup that inches towards a detonation that defends its name, “Gimme That Bounce” may somehow eclipse its predecessor in grand fashion. And with festival season on the horizon, Mau P’s sophomore single more than likely guarantees his return to Dancing Astronaut‘s features once the year’s top tracks are eventually named in December. Enjoy “Gimme That Bounce” in high quality for the first time below as well as his ID-doused set from Countdown NYE here.
