New York celebrates its vibrant history in music with new exhibit 'New York, New Music 1980-1986'

New York continues to stand as a cultural mecca, with artists from all around the world flocking to the city to join its vibrant community. Although New York has always been at the forefront of art, fashion, music, and more, the ’80s saw the city thrive within a musical renaissance. Hosting artists such as Madonna, Talking Heads, Cyndi Lauper, LL Cool J, Blondie, Sonic Youth, and more, the era highlighted the sounds of several emerging genres.

Punk, new wave, hip-hop, jazz, disco, pop, salsa, electro, and more all found a home within the city, with artists pulling influence from one another, no matter the genre. To celebrate the thriving culture of that time, the Museum of the City of New York has opened a new exhibit titled “New York, New Music 1980–1986.”

The exhibit will highlight the artists who defined one of the most influential eras in musical and cultural history, with its opening to coincide with MTV‘s 40th anniversary. In addition to foregrounding the artists who were driving forces during that time, the museum will also include highlights from media outlets, venues, record labels, fashion, and visual arts that inspired the cultural boom.

“New York, New Music 1980–1986” will run through the spring of 2022 and will host specialized events throughout the year, including screenings of popular movies from the ’80s. The exhibit will also include rare footage from live performances throughout the ’80s.
