Sultan + Shepard‘s forthcoming junior album has reached the one-month-away mark, and they’re opening the calendar with a second look into Forever, Now. Due February 17, the doors to their Something, Everything follow-up were opened back in December—on “Losing Ground” with Tishmal—and Sultan + Shepard have recruited a previously familiar This Never Happened face in Julia Church to back “Making Time.”
Church—who featured on Lane 8’s “Oh, Miles” exactly two years prior—had always remained on Sultan + Shepard’s singer-songwriter wishlist. And “Making Time” sees that collaborative daydream be brought to reality, with it going through several iterations before the three struck “the right emotional balance between uplifting and sad.” The four-and-a-half-minute Forever, Now cut decisively doubles down on the melodic house bliss from the LP’s lead offering, finding that exact equilibrium of emotion between Church’s soothing expression and the Canadian pair’s glistening production that raises the bar for what to expect in February.
