It’s official: MultiVersus, Warner Bros.’ ambitious Smash Bros.-style fighting game, is coming to an end—for good this time.
After multiple launches, an extended shutdown, and a relaunch that didn’t quite hit the mark, MultiVersus will go offline on May 30, 2025. So, what does this mean for players, and why is the game closing down? Let’s break it down.
When Is MultiVersus Going Offline?
Warner Bros. Games confirmed that MultiVersus servers will shut down on May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PDT. After this date, the game will no longer be available to download or play online.
Will MultiVersus Still Be Playable?
Yes, but with major limitations. Even though online servers are shutting down, players will still be able to access local matches and fight against AI opponents. However, all online multiplayer features will be gone.
Why Is MultiVersus Shutting Down?
There’s no single reason, but the biggest factors seem to be:
- Declining Player Interest: Despite a strong start, player engagement has dropped significantly, as seen in Steam Charts and Twitch viewership.
- Game Balancing Issues: The game’s updates and mechanics haven’t resonated with all players, leading to frustration over matchmaking and progression.
- Revenue Concerns: Warner Bros. Games already ended real-money transactions, a sign that the game wasn’t performing well financially.
What’s New in Season 5?
Before it shuts down, MultiVersus is launching Season 5 on February 4. This final update will introduce:
- Aquaman (DC Universe) as a playable character
- Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes) joining the roster
- All Season 5 content will be earnable through gameplay
What Happens to Players Who Bought Content?
Since real-money transactions have already stopped, players can no longer buy in-game currency (Gleamium). However, all purchases made before the shutdown will remain available in offline mode.
The Rise and Fall of MultiVersus
MultiVersus had a rollercoaster journey:
- July 2022: The game launched in open beta, quickly gaining popularity.
- Mid-2023: Warner Bros. shut down servers to overhaul netcode, matchmaking, and progression.
- May 2024: The game relaunched with new content, but failed to maintain momentum.
- January 2025: Warner Bros. announced the game’s permanent shutdown.
Will MultiVersus Ever Return?
At this point, it doesn’t look likely. Unlike previous shutdowns where WB Games promised to rework the game, this time the announcement feels final. That said, with Warner Bros. holding the rights to all these major franchises, a spiritual successor or reboot could always happen down the line.
MultiVersus had the potential to be a long-term competitor to Super Smash Bros., but despite its unique character roster and early success, it struggled to retain its player base. With servers shutting down for good on May 30, players have a few months left to enjoy the game before it disappears from online play.
