On Sunday, a call between Donald Trump and Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, was made public by the Washington Post.
In the call, Trump asserted claims of fraud and blackmailed Raffensperger and other government officials if they did not change the cote count. He then asked Raffensperger to “find 11,780” votes to help overturn his loss in Georgia.
“All I want to do is this,” the president said. “I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state.”
The phone call sparked debate over whether it violated federal statutes that prohibit election interference. Now, two democrats, Ted Lieu of California and Kathleen Rice of New York, have asked the FBI to open a criminal investigation into Donald Trump.
“As members of Congress and former prosecutors, we believe Donald Trump engaged in solicitation of, or conspiracy to commit, a number of election crimes,” they wrote to the FBI director, Christopher Wray. “We ask you to open an immediate criminal investigation into the president.”
In the recording, Raffensperger told Trump that they had counted the votes three times before certifying Biden as the winner of the election. “President Trump, we’ve had several lawsuits, and we’ve had to respond in court to the lawsuits and the contentions,” he said. “We don’t agree that you have won.”
However, Trump insists that he still won the election.
On Saturday, Trump hosted a conference call with 50 lawmakers to come up with a plan to reject the Electoral College’s certification of the election results. Over the weekend a dozen Senators from multiple states announced that hey would dismiss Electoral College votes.
