Calussa is flipping the script and stepping into a bold new era. The Cuban-American duo, made up of brothers Gino and Andrew Gomez, has officially launched their new label, NuSonido, and they’re kicking things off with a bang. Their debut project on the label, White Tiger EP, is dropping May 23 in collaboration with rising Australian talent Ben Miller. It’s not just a release-it’s a clear signal that Calussa is leveling up creatively.
For fans who’ve followed them through their previous imprint, Hurry Up Slowly, this new direction might feel like a sharp turn. But according to the brothers, it’s exactly what needed to happen. “This is the perfect time to start something new,” Gino said, explaining that their DJ sets have been evolving in sound, and they wanted a label that matched their current vibe. NuSonido, which literally translates to “new sound” in a blend of English and Spanish, reflects that evolution perfectly.
While Hurry Up Slowly carved out a strong identity rooted in Afro house, NuSonido is opening up the lane for more experimentation. Andrew broke it down by saying, “Hurry Up Slowly became more of one thing-Afro house-while this new label gives us space to explore multiple genres through a house lens.” That house lens includes tech house, tribal rhythms, Latin influence, and a mature, globally-influenced energy that still feels connected to their Miami roots.
The launch release White Tiger EP sets the tone. Teaming up with Ben Miller-who’s aligned with Chris Lake’s creative circle-Calussa delivers two tracks that perfectly capture their refreshed sonic identity. “The Power” leans into a darker, tribal mood that feels steamy and hypnotic, while the title track “White Tiger” is all bounce and groove, channeling that early 2000s house nostalgia but with a crisp 2025 finish.
“These tracks show the side of us we want people to hear more of,” Andrew said. “They bring in that early 2000s house vibe but feel current and club-ready.” That’s exactly the energy they’re aiming to cultivate with NuSonido-a label built for dance floors but with layers and finesse that go beyond simple genre tags.
But this isn’t just a one-off drop. Calussa plans to heat things up post-summer with a weekly release schedule. That means NuSonido is not only going to be a vehicle for their own productions but also a space for emerging and established artists pushing percussive, genre-blending house music. Think of it as a creative sanctuary where rhythm-forward producers can thrive.
So what does this mean for fans of the old Calussa sound? It’s still there-the groove, the percussive backbone, the deep energy-but now with a more refined, flexible presentation. This is Calussa unfiltered, drawing from their roots while carving out something that feels truly next-gen.
White Tiger EP drops everywhere May 23 via NuSonido, and if this is just the beginning, then the rest of 2025 is about to sound a whole lot better.
