Harlem-based conceptual artist, Sean “Belchez” Cort will highlight his perspective on the positioning of black and brown bodies as commodities, through the lens of an American garage sale.
Titled Garage Sale: Ain’t Sh!t Gucci, the exhibition will run from April 21 – April 26, 2021 at the Black Wall Street Gallery in New York City, the exhibition will showcase Belchez’s signature technique of stenciling, screen printing, appliqué and spray painting, on several, never before seen works. Each thought-provoking piece will depict the tactics used throughout time, to profit off of the labor, ideas and goods produced by people of color. Bold imagery and signs, juxtaposed against Black historical figures, will be woven together throughout the show.
“Marginalized groups have always been viewed as products and commodities for sale, and not as people,” said the artist. “And, even as ‘products,’ we’ve struggled to have ownership of our talent, services and ideas. With this show, I hope to put this concept on full display.”
