In between touring the world from Bali to Helsinki and building a new music studio where he will embark on the creation of a new artist album, electronic artist deadmau5 has pulled together a selection of unique tracks from his archives for his new ep out today, July 19 on mau5trap.
The four-song collection–titled ‘some ep’–features handpicked gems from deadmau5’ personal production archive, dusted off and polished for fans to finally enjoy. The release of the EP drops alongside the announcement and on sale of his popular ‘day of the deadmau5’ seasonal shows in Chicago, Mexico City, Washington D.C., and for the first time in Puerto Rico this October. All dates are listed below and tickets are on sale now here.
‘some ep’ features “Quezacotl” with its beaconing symphonic-like chords act as a call to arms as a barrage of melodic synths take flight, a true return to form with all the makings of a classic deadmau5 track. The song made its debut as part of the set of his sold out ‘retro5pective: 25 years of deadmau5’ shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and the Brooklyn Mirage in NYC this past spring. There’s also the epic techno production “Wet” from his alter ego TESTPILOT (the alias of Joel Zimmerman aka deadmau5). For his first TESTPILOT studio production since 2014, the chameleon-like studio maven takes us on a journey through slippery twists and turns around dark corners of pulsating synths and four-on-the-floor beats. Other tracks on the EP include big serve productions “Sever” and “Input Output,” the latter which was also debuted at his Brooklyn Mirage ‘retro5pective’ show.
The ‘day of the deadmau5’ shows are known for never being the same. From revered staples like “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff,” “Strobe” and Kx5’s “Escape” to the material on ‘some ep’, deadmau5 will perform a unique set alongside state-of-the-art production and visuals with spooky flair. Fans are encouraged to come in costume and show off their custom-made mau5heads. For 2024, fans have the opportunity to catch both deadmau5 and/or TESTPILOT sets in each market and can expect a different line-up for each of mau5trap artists and friends who are on deck to join the Halloween fun.
All four extensive instrumentals on ‘some ep’ take the listener on a translucent sonic journey:
“…‘Quezacotl,’ sees the 43-year-old artist returning to the essentials that built his reputation. The instrumental composition transports the audience with majestic symphonic chords and his unique synths arriving in waves. It’s everything that makes up a classic deadmau5 track.” – Rolling Stone Quebec
“’Quezacotl’ seamlessly blends complexity with accessibility, a hallmark of deadmau5’s best work. Uplifting melodies take flight, weaving through the soundscape with an airy grace as spritely synths dance amidst a lush backdrop, their tones friendly and inviting. It’s a return to form for deadmau5…” – EDM.com
“Known for his genre-defying sound, deadmau5 delivers a track that is both captivating and immersive. ‘Wet’ showcases TESTPILOT’s darker, more experimental side, featuring intricate beats and layers that draw listeners into a deep, sonic journey. Fans of deadmau5 are sure to be captivated by this latest release, which marks a bold evolution in his ever-evolving musical landscape.” – MXDWN
