Department of Sound launches free introductory music production course, Summer of Sound

Department of Sound has launched Summer of Sound, a free introductory course on music production and podcasting. The self-paced program will be available for enrollment starting June 22 and students will have until September 22 to complete the course.

Presented in partnership with Soundtrap, a Spotify-owned music and podcast recording software, Summer of Sound comprises step-by-step online lessons that teach students song composition, beat making, and podcast production, among a variety of other skills. To complete the course, students are required to submit a final project consisting of a beat, song, or podcast, which will be showcased at a later date. Anyone 13 years of age and older is eligible to participate.

Since its establishment in 2019, the Sacramento-based non-profit organization has worked to empower youth through music education and spark a passion for the music and arts in its local community. Department of Sound specifically seeks to provide resources to the public, placing a particular emphasis on community youth, to promote personal development and create a platform for self expression.
