Review: Zeds Dead’s Fourth of July Weekend Marks a New Era

For more than a decade, Zeds Dead have turned Denver’s Fourth of July weekend into a pilgrimage for bass music fans. What began as an annual Red Rocks tradition has evolved into one of electronic music’s most anticipated destination events, bringing together thousands of fans for multiple days of music, community, and unforgettable moments.

This year’s edition marked the beginning of a new era. Drawing more than 30,000 fans across four events in three days, the duo launched their Journey of a Lifetime Tour with sold-out performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the annual Deadbeats Backyard Jamboree, and the Mission Ballroom Hangover show, while debuting Return to the Return (of the Spectrum of Intergalactic Happiness) live for the first time.

Accompanied by their most ambitious production to date, the new “Channel Flipping” visual concept transformed every performance into a cinematic experience, seamlessly weaving together music, television, film, archival footage, and nostalgic cultural references to introduce the next era of Zeds Dead.

Deadrocks XI Night One

From the moment fans entered into Red Rocks Amphitheatre, it was clear this wasn’t business as usual. Night One served as the live debut of Return to the Return (of the Spectrum of Intergalactic Happiness), introducing audiences to Zeds Dead’s newest creative chapter. Musically, the set balanced fresh material with longtime fan favorites, allowing the new songs to breathe while still delivering the heavy bass, emotional melodies, and unpredictable pacing that have defined Zeds Dead’s live shows for years.

The duo wasted no time setting the tone, starting off early with Wooli’s remix of “Rudeboy” before unveiling a string of new material, including an unreleased collaboration with Distinct Motive. The most unforgettable moment arrived when Zeds Dead performed their new single, “Pourin Rain,” just as rain began falling over Red Rocks. The night concluded with the longtime favorites “White Satin” and “ACL TV” before the duo’s signature “Pure Imagination” outro.

Deadrocks XI Night Two

Building upon the previous evening’s momentum, Zeds Dead delivered another marathon journey through dubstep, drum & bass, and melodic bass. The constantly shifting visuals ensured that even returning attendees experienced something fresh, reinforcing the “Channel Flipping” concept as an integral part of the performance. Highlights included the return of “Rescue (Bloom Remix),” a flip of Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name,” and the new single “Falling Down.”

Deadbeats Backyard Jamboree

Beyond the headline performances, the annual Deadbeats Backyard Jamboree highlighted what makes the Deadbeats brand unique. Equal parts block party and fan celebration, the daytime event offered a more relaxed atmosphere complete with food vendors, activities, and exclusive merchandise. It reinforces that the weekend extends far beyond concerts, creating an environment where fans can connect with one another while celebrating the culture surrounding the label.

Mission Ballroom

As tradition dictates, the weekend concluded with the Mission Ballroom Hangover show. The duo delivered two full sets, but the highlight came when Of The Trees joined the duo for an unexpected b2b performance. The collaboration blended both artists’ signature styles into a seamless showcase of deep bass and experimental sound design, providing the perfect finale to an already historic weekend.

A New Journey of a Lifetime

Deadbeats’ Fourth of July Weekend has become one of bass music’s defining annual traditions, but this year’s edition carried an added sense of significance. Zeds Dead could have easily relied on familiarity; instead, they introduced an ambitious visual concept and debuted an entirely new album. If this weekend was any indication, the Journey of a Lifetime is only just beginning.
