24-hour 'nightlife districts' could soon come to New York – Mix Session

Closing time? Not for the 24-hour “nightlife districts” that New York City’s Office Of Nightlife is considering establishing. The districts would do away with the 4:00 a.m. ET curfew that the city’s nightlife businesses are currently expected to abide by, allowing applicable establishments to take advantage of unlimited hours of operating activity, and, hopefully, recoup funds lost by COVID-19-related closures. Similar initiatives in Berlin and Amsterdam have inspired New York to explore the possibility of implementing the nightlife districts, outlined in the NYC Mayor’s Office of Nightlife report 2018 – 2021.

Senior executive of the city’s Office Of Nightlife Ariel Palitz stands at the forefront of the movement, explaining,

“Everything is on the table right now. We are recommending this as a pilot to identify areas where 24-hour use might be appropriate; new licenses that are committed to hosting community programming in exchange for this allowance in certain areas have proved wildly successful.”
