While he is known for many accomplishments in both music and acting, David Bowie‘s alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, was arguably one of the most disruptive creative endeavors of his career. Stardust was only present for a short stint from 1971 to 1973, during which Bowie played shows as the flamboyant character. However, the period is regarded as an iconic time during the rockstar’s life as it provided the creative impetus for his hit single, “Starman,” and subsequent album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Although the alter ego never re-emerged after the last show in 1973, video game designer Paul Campbell recently divulged that Bowie had plans to re-launch Ziggy Stardust from outer space in the ’90s. In an interview with The Mirror, Campbell described talking to Bowie about his plan:
“We talked about buying up a bunch of old satellites that were circling the Earth. He was going to relaunch Ziggy from space. The idea was that Ziggy would beam us transmissions – ‘Are you receiving me…?’”
Campbell met Bowie when he was helping build the video game, Omikron: The Nomad Soul, scored by Bowie. Campbell also mentioned that Bowie had an idea to leave the Bowie surname and re-emerge under his given name, David Jones. Unfortunately, these plans were suspended indefinitely when Bowie passed away back in 2016 from liver cancer.
