New York-based drum ‘n’ bass artist DJ Empress has accused the late Erick Morillo of sexual assault, detailing her story in a Facebook post written on September 8. According to the Empress, she met Morillo when she was 17 years old, working as a buyer at a record store in New York. Her account states that he would touch her inappropriately while she was working, in addition to verbally harassing her with unsolicited and inappropriate sexual commentary.
DJ Empress notes that, in those days, working at the record store was an essential way for her to grow her career as a DJ, and on a purely practical note, she needed the paycheck to survive. In addition, she alleges that her boss and co-workers knew of the assault and did nothing to stop it.
Morillo was found dead in his Miami Beach home on September 1. Prior to his death, Morillo was arrested on sexual battery charges, turning himself in after a rape kit tested positive for his DNA.
