Flea and John Frusciante share early record inspiration in new open format DJ set

On Saturday May 23, Flea and John Frusciante took over Dublab Radio to share the music that inspired and shaped them as artists. During the two-hour session broadcasted live from Frusciante’s house, the bandmates played a series of records and chatted about the “jams that got us going and impacted how we play our instruments.” The pair dive into their early history growing up in Los Angeles, Flea’s jazz origins, and formative punk and rock influences.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were primed for a massive year before the coronavirus pandemic hit, having reunited with their long-time guitarist Frusciante after more than a ten year departure. The iconic Chili Peppers lineup would have performed their first live show at this year’s now-canceled Boston Calling as Sunday’s highly-anticipated headliner. Back in February, the band (minus drummer Chad Smith) got together for a private event, marking the first gig with Frusciante since the reunion. A new album is said to be in the works—following the band’s 2016 LP The Getaway.
