Lil Wayne Pays Tribute to Global Icon Kobe Bryant at 2020 BET Awards

Lil Wayne is an avid Lakers fan and an even bigger Kobe Bryant fan. Back in 2009, Weezy released a track dedicated to The Black Mamba after winning his 4th championship ring. The two developed a kindred friendship over the years. Tunechi’s prodigy, Drake, even mentions the first time meeting Kobe Bryant during his first encounter with Wayne. Bryant went to get an exclusive listen to the iconic Tha Carter III album prior to its release on Weezy’s tour bus.

Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, along with seven others died in a fatal helicopter crash on January 26. The tragic death shocked the entire world. The Laker legend’s influence stretched beyond the basketball court. He inspired a generation with his commitment to excellence and hard work. He coined his lifestyle Mamba Mentality.

The Young Money CEO took the virtual stage at the 2020 BET Awards to honor the late great Kobe Bryant. He performed his original first of his “Kobe Bryant” track. He altered the second verse to pay tribute to Bryant’s daughter Gianna, his wife Vanessa, and the rest of the Bryant family.

“2 fingers for the Mambacita I’m screaming Black Mamas Matter. Heart goes out to Vanessa and the whole Black Mamba Family,” raps Lil Wayne.
