It is not everyday you come across a producer like Julia Lewis. The Bay Area native first fell in love with Jazz music as an adolescent looking to develop his production prowess. During this stage of development, Lewis, born, Benjamin Falik, took on a number of instruments. These included the saxophone, piano and bass guitar. Despite the classical roots, he had his eyes and ears set on the sounds of Hip-Hop & R&B.
The Los Angeles based producer received his first placement after linking up with fellow Bay Area native, G-Eazy. While both artists shared mutual friends, they were not as acquainted. Julia sent a beat he had been working on to Bay Area artist, Rexx Life Raj, with intentions for it to land in the “No Limit” rapper’s hands. Lo and behold, the track turned into G-Eazy’s “West Coast.” The track would later feature YG, Blueface and AllBlack.
The placement ultimately led to conversations with his current management, The Revels Group and the rest is history. Most recently, Julia Lewis produced one of NBA Youngboy’s most recent hits, “Kacey Talk.” The guitar heavy track peaked at No. 50 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts, making it Julia’s highest placements to date. In addition, YB’s album Top debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Lewis’ success led to a deal with Quincy Jones Productions and Scooter Braun’s Atlas Music joint venture, in what he calls an “all-star team” in the two music giants. Despite some early apprehension, he realized the benefit of working with a pair of historic visionaries and their teams.
His early success shows that Lewis’ production is not bound to one genre. Instead, it is a melting pot combining his musical roots. Fans can anticipate the Julia Lewis sound on upcoming collaborations with Ne-Yo, Quando Rondo and more.
