Martin Garrix, Space Ducks surprise deliver house rework of 070 Shake’s ‘Cocoon’

The week after Martin Garrix made his Brooklyn Mirage grand introduction in September of 2022, he slotted another unidentified track into his live sets. It didn’t take too long for that ID to be quickly labeled as a rework of 070 Shake‘s summer single, “Cocoon.” But who that remix exactly belonged to remained a giant question mark towards the end of 2022, with Garrix continuing to test it out at Ultra Japan, EDC Orlando, and Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena in the months that trailed its Italy unveiling. The STMPD RCRDS boss then let it be quietly known that it actually belonged to him, marking his first officially released remix—of a song that’s not his and not counting his “Someone You Loved” remix—since 2015’s take on The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.” And on release day—which arrived out of virtually nowhere—a second name unexpectedly comes on board, Space Ducks.

Space Ducks’—named one of Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2023—involvement doesn’t necessarily come as too much of a bombshell, considering the space-bound duo’s debut original “Panic” was delivered through STMPD RCRDS and prevailed as a longstanding piece in Garrix’s sets throughout 2022’s latter half. That was all Garrix needed to hear before making the inevitable call to cross collaborative lines, with their spin of the You Can’t Kill Me album cut—which had a video component directed by none other than Alexander Wessely—transferring out its gritty R&B state and smoothly wrapping 070 Shake’s irresistible crooning around a thundering plate of house. With Garrix’s tour set to officially pick back up in early March—leading to a March 24 date with Bayfront Park—the “Cocoon” remix will hopefully make the trip with him so attendees can properly experience it now that its existence has been fully realized.
