Data shows physical music release sales soar amid pandemic

The physical music marketplace, Discogs released their mid-year music report for 2020 which showcases fascinating developments to the industry during COVID-19. In terms of physical music—sales for cassettes, CDs, vinyl and digital downloads, these categories increased during the coronavirus quarantine period. Discogs’ sales have increased almost 30 percent from 2019, and vinyl is up 33 percent. CDs have increased 31 percent in sales and cassettes 30.5 percent. An overall 33.83 percent increase in physical music sales was recorded in the first six months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

This has proven to be a savior for many brick and mortar shops who have been able to move inventory to and sell records through Discogs.

Some of the best selling records in the first half of 2020 include Tame Impala’s The Slow Rush at no. 1, Khruangbin and Leon Bridges‘ joint Texas Sun following closely at three, Dua Lipa‘s Future Nostalgia in fifth, Thundercat‘s It Is What It Is in the seventh slot, and Grimes‘ Miss Anthropocene at eight.
