Harlem rap icon Cam’ron has offered a candid assessment of Jay-Z’s recent Roots Picnic freestyle, expressing that the performance fell short of expectations. In a discussion regarding the competitive landscape of modern hip-hop, the Dipset leader suggested that the legendary Brooklyn rapper’s decision to step into the arena felt uncharacteristic.
“For him to even do that, he’s wild competitive,” Cam’ron remarked, acknowledging the common perception that Jay-Z typically operates from a position of untouchable status. “Must’ve came down ‘cause you paying attention to what n***as is saying.”
Cam’ron further posited that the perceived misfire of the freestyle provides a strategic opening for Drake to assert his position. He pointed to the shifting goalposts of success in the industry, noting that while Jay-Z historically championed Billboard metrics as a benchmark for greatness, the narrative seems to have evolved now that the Toronto superstar is dominating the charts.
“Now that Drake is killing him in the numbers, n***as is like, ‘Why don’t numbers count now?’” Cam’ron added, highlighting the irony in the current discourse surrounding commercial success and lyrical prowess.
